Dance of Death, Scharffenberg, 18th Century Woodcut, The Painter in Oakwood, Northumberland for sale

DEATH AND THE PAINTER. A very rare woodcut by George Scharffenberg, based on the famous Dance of Death by Holbein. The woodcuts were originally made in 1576 and acquired by the Mechel family in 1715. This example is taken from an incomplete version of "Basler Todten-Tantz" (Basle Dance of Death). The 2nd photograph is of an inscription inside the back cover which shows that the book was purchased in Basle in 1793. the book was sold as a souvenir of the famous Basle Dance of Death, but depicts Holbein's version which is different from that at Basle and far more elaborate.
